10 SEO Tips for WordPress

By: SEO Portal

WordPress is getting more popular by the day. It enables people to set up a blog, and even a complete website within minutes. With all the great free plugins and designs out there it is really an easy to use and complete blogging solution.I get asked for specific SEO tips for WordPress very often. Basically all the ‘usual’ SEO stuff is also applicable for WordPress. But besides that, there are a few tips for WordPress I’d like to share with you. Here it goes:1. Use PermalinksBe sure to use Permalinks on your blog.By default WordPress uses web URLs which have question marks and lots of numbers in them. These links are hard to spider for search engines, and therefor your postings aren’t indexed as fast and as good as you want to.WordPress offers you the ability however, to create a custom URL structure for your permalinks and archives. You can find this option in your Admin panel. Choose ‘Options’ in the menu and there ‘Permalinks’.This brings us immidiately to Tip 2:2. Place your titles up front in your URLsIn the Permalinks section you can choose for the ‘Date and name based’ option. This will place the year, month, day and post title in your URL.For SEO purposes it’s better to have your post title up front. So instead you should choose for the ‘Custom’ option and put in something like:/%postname%/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/This will give you an URL like this:http://www.seo-portal.com/section-targeting-for-AdSense/2006/07/06/3. TagsTags are a great SEO addition to your blog. They enable search engines to crawl your website more easily and in addition to that, create specific pages for your tags/keywords.You can install the Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin on your WordPress blog. Get the plugin here: http://www.neato.co.nz/ultimate-tag-warrior/4. Page TitlesMake sure you set good titles on your pages. We discussed putting the post title up front in your URL. You should do the same thing for your Titles. You can do this by changing the tag in your header.php (located in wp-content/themes/your theme/)You can use the following code in order to get your post title in front, followed by your blog name:<title><?php wp_title(); ?> : <?php bloginfo(’name’); ?> 5. Choose your Post Titles carefullyYour Post Titles should be as clear as possible. Don’t stuff your titles with keywords you are targeting with your whole blog.Choose your keywords carefully per posting, and get those words in your Post Title.6. AutolinksCross link to your own posts and pages in your own content. Do this by linking your keywords to the relevant postings. To facilitate this work, you can install the SH-Autolink plugin.7. Related PostsPut links to related posts under your postings. This helps search engines crawling your site and indexing all your postings. You can get a plugin for this here: http://www.w-a-s-a-b-i.com/archives/2006/02/02/wordpress-related-entries-20/8. Ping ServicesEverytime you post or edit a posting or page, your WordPress blog can notify lots of sites that you updated your blog.Be sure to use this feature! You can set up this feature in Options >> Writing. You can find a list of sites to ping on the WordPress site:http://codex.wordpress.org/Update_Services9. Google SitemapsGoogle has a tool for webmasters called Google Sitemaps. This will help Google index your website, and let’s you tell Google which pagesare most important. If you make use of this feature, you will be able to see for what searches your site was shown in the results. This helps you optimizing your appearance in Google. You can use this plugin to automatically create a sitemap for your WordPress blog:http://www.arnebrachhold.de/2005/06/05/google-sitemaps-generator-v2-final10. CategoriesCategories help you organize your content. If you have the permalinks turned on, the category names will apear in your URL.This is why it is also very important to name your categories carefully; Try to use keywords to name your categories and don’t be afraid to make a load.WordPress enables you to make use of subcategories and sub-subcategories etc. etc. This way you can narrow down your focus on certain keyword phrases.Consider the following example:You have a website about selling photocamera’s. You could organize your articles/postings like this:fotocamera’s >> Digital camera’s >> SLR >> NikonIf a user would be searching for “digital SLR camera nikon” the deepest nested category would have a good optimized URL for this search as the URL would be something like thiswww.yoursite.com/fotocameras/digital-cameras/SLR/nikon/You can make use of the King Categories Widget to organize your categories:http://www.blog.mediaprojekte.de/cms-systeme/wordpress/wordpress-widget-king-categories/

Search Engine Optimization - Tips and Tricks

By: fubrus

Unique content is King. Search engines love new, unique and updated content. If you produce new content at a rate of just one reasonably sized page per day and tied in with the other advice throughout the site, I can almost guarantee you will get good listings. Remember though, write for the visitors but cater for the search engines. If your field of expertise fits into a niche in the market, all the better for you but you must get unique content all you will fall behind.Page Structure. Search engine bots can sometimes get confused with poorly coded html, javascript and other web languages. If the bot has to wait too long or cannot decipher the web language then it will just abandon your site and move on to the next, even if it manages to get through the code it usually leads to poor search engine indexing of your website. You should also keep to widely used file extensions like .htm, .html, .php, .asp for your pages.Loading Speed. The loading speed of your website should be kept to a minimum, if it takes long than 5 seconds on 256kb+ connections then you lose visitors - both real and search engine bots. There are a variety of reasons why pages can load slowly, it may either be your web server, poorly coded server side code like php or client side code like javascript which can slow or even stop your page from loading.Visitor Navigation. This is more an aesthetic feature of your website focused at real visitors but you need to have some sort of standard navigation that is the same throughout your whole site. People can be put off and leave your website if they find it difficult to browse easily, search engine bots may also miss links if they can only be found deep within your site. Try to make as many internal links as possible available on each page.Site Hierarchy. Site hierachy can be great for adding keyword density to your web site. An example of site hierachy working effectively would be this page, seo-advice.php. The full link contains SEO twice - www.seoassistance.com/seo-advice.php which is very beneficial in the way search engines determine your sites relevance to a particular subject. Use your domain, folders and file names to your advantage.Avoid Blackhat SEO. Blackhat SEO is a vast topic that commands little respect from real webmasters as it means using underhand methods to gain search engine rankings, although the site is usually banned quickly. Blackhat SEO includes using link farms, search engine spamming, hidden or disguised text, fake meta tag data, using duplicate content and using doorway pages. I would recommend you stay away from tactics like this as you will end up losing out in the long run.Targeted Linkswaps. Link swaps are great but you must make them work for you. It does little good for you when your going for top search engine positions when your link swaps are untargeted. You should choose some specific keywords for both the link text and the link title text then make sure before you link swap that the other webmaster adds those specific keywords with the link.

Title Tags That Search Engines (and your customers) Will Love

By: Ben Finklea

In my previous Title Tag article, I introduced the title tag and told you what it is and why it's so important. Now let's discuss how to write a tag that Search Engines (and your customers) will love. There are two competing forces pulling for your title tag's attention. First, the search engines use your title tag to help determine where in their engine your website fits. Second, your customers will see and use your title tag to help them determine if your site has what they're looking for and to remind them what your site is about when they see it in their bookmark list. A good title tag takes care of both.In my previous Title Tag article, I introduced the title tag and told you what it is and why it's so important. If that's all you did then you'd be OK but you'd miss out on the full value that a title tag can bring. Let's start with that, though. Our title tag looks like this:Austin Texas MortgagesNow, that works for search engines but not so much for customers. Sure, they'll know that you sell mortgages but they may not remember which company. You always want them to remember who you are. So, you could do this:My Mortgage Co Austin Texas MortgagesOK. That's Good for your customers but it moves the really good keywords out of the first position. (Search engines assume that the most important words come early in the title tag.) So, how about this?:Get Austin Texas Mortgages at My Mortgage CoWell...now you're optimizing for the word "Get". Not so good. How about this:Austin Texas Mortgages by My Mortgage CoThat's pretty good. The keywords are front and center and the company name is right out there where everyone can see it. You could also put a separator of some kind instead of the word "by". Like or - . I think it's more of a personal preference than an important SEO point. Now, go write your own!

Some Ways to Improve The Efficiency of Your King Content

By: Mike Pham

There are thousands of articles, books and forum posts which showed that content is king in search engine optimization (SEO). In this article, you can find some ways that can help you improve this king content for your web site.* Content for people first, not for search engines - Some webmasters make a common mistake that they optimize everything for search engines but forget about web visitors. The goal of our website is not only to get high search rankings, but also to sell our service. So you should give your website visitors what they are really looking for. Make sure your content flows naturally and you're not just trying to stuff more keywords in the interest of search engines. If users don't find your content convincing they won't buy from you.* Studying popular search terms - High search engine ranking is meaningless if your website only ranks high on terms nobody searches for. You need to ask your colleagues, vendors, competitors, clients, ... or use online tools (e.g.: wordtracker.com) to identify what keywords which potential customers would use to search your web site, then try to use them often, in titles, and throughout the body.* Building article directory - How can you optimize the content if your web site only offers a simple service? It means there are just several pages in your whole website. So, to increase the content in quality you should write some articles, reviews which are related to your service. A site with more web pages means there are more chances of different terms that will become findable in search engines. You may consider adding free articles to your article directory. On the Internet today, one can find a lot of websites which provide articles free for republishing. Of course you must accept the policy of these web sites and authors before using these articles.* Making a clear website organization - Build a site which is simple to navigate with a well linking structure. Every page should be accessible from at least one text link. It's better to be sparing with image links, Flash, JavaScript drop-down menus, or other codes that are not HTML based... because the search engine crawlers cannot recognize text contained in these kinds of display. In case using them is required, then make sure a text based menu or a sitemap is also included in the Web site. Last but not least, you should use meaningful words in your URLs, use as simple a web page layout and design as possible. In conclusion, it is undeniable that content is king in the kingdom of search engines. The quality of your content is the main factor which decides the success in Internet marketing. So improving your content is very necessary.

Site Owners with SEO: DOs and DON'Ts

By: Mike Pham

As a search engine optimizer, I've had a great opportunity to work with many site owners for website submission and optimization services and had some working experiences to share with you in this article. Site owners come from different categories: e-commerce sites, services or personal pages. Some of them have the expertise in Computers and Internet but most of them are the neophytes in the search engine optimization (SEO) religion. So, the purpose of this article is providing novice site owners with some useful rules of behaviors (DOs and DON'Ts) to come along with their SEO campaigns. * SEO firms DON'T help you out. DO help yourself - Search Engine Optimization process is more and more manipulated and it is becoming the big market nowadays. Many websites are offering SEO service with different costs. They promise that customers' sites will be on top of search engines. If so, who will be kicked out of the list? No one? So if you are a site owner with a small budget and modest knowledge of SEO, lean on SEO firm as just an advisor. They cannot do all the things for you. To help you out in SEO, do it yourself. In most cases, the site owners will play an important role in the success of SEO campaigns. * DON'T submit your sites to thousands of search engines and directories - Simply, in reality, there are not even thousands of "engines" to submit to. There are, however, hundreds of search directories, hybrid search engines, free-for-all (FFA) pages and classified ad sites. They are simply a list of unorganized links to the last fifty or so URLs that were submitted to the service. The primary purpose of these sites is to gather email addresses from Web marketers so they can be sent offers for other products and services. By submitting, you are unknowingly giving your consent for them to email you. Some major search engines (e.g.: Google) are not fond of such link farms and may actively ban this type of site. * Repetitive submissions DON'T improve your rankings in search engines - Many site owners misunderstand between search engine submission and search engine optimization. So they just dig in finding as many as possible free submission services on the Internet and hope that someday their site will be on the top. Search engine submission is just the first step to quickly notify the search engines about the nascence of your site on the Internet. How your site grows or how your site is optimized is more important to search engines to place your site at the top of the search index. So repetitive submissions don't work in these cases. Take time to pay more attention to your site's content and link building. * DON'T try to trick the search engines in any way - The search engines today are smarter than you have ever imagined. The techniques like most times keyword repeated in a row (keyword stuffing), same color text used as the background (hidden text), doorway pages.. are obsolete and they may be against you. Search engines don't like to get fooled and they may penalize your site for that. Moreover, be careful with the services like automatic link exchange or buying text links. You can use them on your own but take precautions. * Your websites' exposures on search engines DON'T mean top rankings and web conversions - Some SEO firms guarantee that your sites will be included in search engines. It is so easy because when your site is indexed, it is included in search engines right away and you can see it there by some simple but useless keywords. No one will find you with that keywords or syntaxes. In addition, pay attention to for which search engines the SEO firms will be optimizing your site. It will be easier to get listed on some less-reputed search engines comparing to Google or Yahoo. On the other hand, distinguish between standard and sponsor listing. You must pay for sponsor listing but get less visitors and sales. So make sure you understand clearly what SEO firms are offering. A successful SEO campaign requires the acumen of site owners as well as a tight cooperation between site owners and optimizers. Before the campaign starts, they should discuss the price, the time for the campaign, keyword selection and the specific search engines for optimization.... * DO get familiar with SEO tools such as search engines, HTML, PageRank - Some site owners lean on the webmasters on every task related to their sites (e.g.: add a text link, change page title). In most cases, the site owners will play an important role in the success of SEO campaign by getting familiar with SEO tools like search engines, HTML, PageRank. Search engines and PageRank evaluation will help you search for competitors' sites, evaluate the keywords, check sites' link popularity (number of links to your sites) and link saturation (number of pages on your sites have been indexed). Besides, with HTML basic syntax, you can easily exchange links with other sites on your own and stop calling the webmasters all the time for modifying pages with links. * DO start writing today - Site owners may be beginners in SEO but experts in their industries. And today, writing is a significant skill to do SEO. Start writing some articles about your business now and submit them with your backlinks (links to your website) to article directories to increase the popularity of your site. For instance, suppose you were a mother at home and managed an ecommerce site selling some strollers and baby accessories. That will be wonderful if your share your experiences in choosing and using the strollers with other mummies-to-be on some women forum and article directories. Not only are search engines notified but also some potential customers will be attracted to your site. In this article, I've provided the site owners with some basic rules of behaviors to do SEO. They include but not limit to myths about Search Engines, SEO firms, importance of SEO tools and article writing skill. Learning them today to make friends with search engines and shove your competitors aside.

Solutions for 50 Backlinks with PageRank greater than 2

By: Mike Pham

Today, no one can deny the importance of backlinks in Search Engine Optimization, especially in Google Optimization. In this article, you can find some solutions for the goal of 50 backlinks with PageRank greater than 2 for new websites. When this goal is archived, I'm totally sure that the pagerank of your website will be boosted to at least 3 in the next update of Google. There are two main solutions for this goal:- Finding links on our own, not spending money.- Buying text links (backlinks).1. Finding links on our own, not spending money*Methods in this solution include:- Find relevant, quality websites and request for link exchanges. - Submit to quality directories. - Submit testimonials on websites where you have purchased any services or products. - Write articles or posts to submit to other websites, blogs, press and forums. *Pros in this solution:- No money. - Robust, stationary links. - Accepted by search engines.*Cons in this solution:- More time and efforts.- Two-way links (reciprocal links). - Difficult to determine the time to achieve goal.*References for this solution:- Link Exchange programs: linkalizer.com, linkmarket.net, freelinkcentral.com- Automatic link exchange programs: belinked.info, onewaytextlinks.com, build-reciprocal-links.com, linkdash.com - Quality Directories: businesspages.org, a2z-free.com, alphabiz.org- Article Directories: goarticles.com, articlealley.com, article99.com, ezinearticles.com *Tips:- You can find more sites for link exchange from studying your competitors' link popularity. Use search engines to perform this check, the keyword in many cases is: link:your_competitor_url.- When visiting some directories, pay attention to Directory category. You may find the others directories there. For example, in Directory category of businesspages.org, you can find some other good Australian directories.*Estimated time: 2 months2. Buying text links*Methods in this solution include:- Buy text links (backlinks) directly from sites (in case they don't accept link exchanges) - Buy text links from text link brokers. - Buy text links from link auction sites. - Pay fee to be included in big, quality directories (Yahoo, Overture, LookSmart...)*Pros in this solution:- Less time and efforts to get links. - One-way links (better than reciprocal links)*Cons in this solution- Money. We must pay fee every month (or year) for some links. - Buying text links (many in the same time) from text link brokers isn't encouraged by search engines. They can penalize us. - Some links are volatile (not permanent).*References for this solution:- Advertising on sites: iwebtool.com/pagerank_checker (PR5 - $10.00 per month) - Text link brokers: textlinkbrokers.com (5 Permanent Links PR0 – PR4: $175 /month), textlinkpopularity.com (10 Links from PR 3 Pages: $150 - Pay only once for permanent links - no recurring charges)- Link auction sites: linkadage.com- Big, quality directories: Yahoo! Directory (1 link - $299/year - your site will be reviewed first)*Tips:- When buying links from brokers, be sure that you can preview the pages in which your link will be included. Besides the PageRank, there are other factors to take into consideration such as: relevant links in this page, how many links in that page, whether your link is static, ... *Estimated time: 1 week (some directories need more time to review our request)3. Conclusion:It seems that the goal of 50 backlinks with PageRank greater than 2 for new websites is not an easy one. Improving link popularity is a long, patient but obligatory process. It's up to you to decide which solution is better or the combination of these two ones.

Ten On-Page Website Credibility Builders for Your Customer

By: Chris Le Roy

The Internet has become a haven for crooks, pushers, thieves, and many more terms I can not think of at this exact moment in time and it is no wonder that many people who use the Internet have become wary of doing business online. Personally, I do not blame them; however that does not help those of us who want to provide a product or service to the billions of people surfing the net so I have devised a list of ten elements you should have on your website that will help build credibility with those people who are visiting your site.I am quite sure you will know some of these ten on-page elements but there are others you may have thought about but never done anything about. So let us begin …#1 - Have a Clear GuaranteeEvery Internet marketing guru or business coach will tell you that you must have a clear guarantee. Essentially a guarantee is simply a document that states to the customer that you standby your product or you will give the customer their money back. Many internet websites have guarantees, but very few in my experience will actually standby the guarantee but I will talk about that more in element number 10.One other element about a guarantee is to make it believable. If it is not believable then nobody is going to buy from you. Let me explain …A few years ago I ran a campaign through my training company that a brand new intensive training program we had developed would get you a job within one month or we would hire you ourselves. Now I want to say, to this day, I standby that guarantee, but in reality the campaign was a total flop because nobody actually believed we were serious. In fact what happened was that most of the recruitment agencies actually called us asking us what positions we had available and could they fill them for us. These guys totally missed the point! The bottom line is that if you are going to have a guarantee then it must be believable. If it is not then you have absolutely no hope of making a sale.#2 - Verifiable TestimonialsTestimonials are everywhere on the internet. Just about every single sales site has at least one testimonial but most of them are non-verifiable. What I mean by verifiable is that there is no mechanism to prove whether that person really exists or if they really do support that product. In fact, when I started thinking about this article, I found five websites on-line and contacted them to verify their testimonials. That is I rang them and asked them how I could get into contact with the people giving their testimonials. Guess what, most of them said they no longer stay in contact with those people or the testimonials were not real. The word … BUSTED comes to mind! There are few ways you can create Verifiable Testimonials. One is to have the person do a video on your website and then host that video. Lots of companies do that now. The second way is to ask the person who is giving you the testimonial if they will put a single Testimonial webpage on their website. That's right. Their testimonial is confirmed by you providing a link to their website that basically says they do endorse the product. What this means is that your customers can check to see if the persons website that is offering the testimonial is real and if they are the actual owners of the website (Note that you can the owners of the website using - whois) and not just a setup. Way to many internet businesses are to lazy to get verifiable testimonials and put fake ones on their websites. A word of warning to all those doing this, it will come back and bite you.#3 - Join Your Local - Chamber of Commerce, Better Business BureauRemember, if you are looking for credibility then join the local Chamber of Commerce or Better Business Bureau. Most Chamber of Commerce organisations actually have programs now where when you join as a member then you are allowed to show their logo on your website to prove you are a member. One of the reasons this is a good practice is because most organisations like the Chamber of Commerce have a Business Code of Practice that they require all members to follow and 90% of those organisations enforce that code of practice. If you do not follow it, you can find yourself booted out as a member and on a banned list on their website.A word of warning, do not put a logo onto your website were you are not a member, especially a logo from the Better Business Bureau. Whilst I was going through the research for this article, I wanted to check out a few sites and see if they really were Better Business Bureau members and guess what, they weren't so remember, the key advantage to you as a member is people can verify that you are a member and legit. Remember the downside is that if you are not a member they can also verify that as well and you will lose the sale.#4 - Register with Certified Companies like - Thawte, AlexaAnything with the word Certified in it, will always make consumers feel more comfortable. For example if you run a website that does credit card transactions then it is mandatory to have a digital certificate issued by a reputable company like Thawte. Companies like this run a very strict Certification program where you can use a Certified Logo on your website to prove to consumers you have been checked out.My organisation has used Thawte in the past and we went through a lot of checks and balances to make them comfortable that we were legit. This included having to provide information like our companies Certificate of Incorporation as well as the team at Thawte visiting Australian Government websites like the ACCC to prove we were who we said we were and a properly registered companies.Companies like Thawte have put these mechanisms into place, to ensure that consumers can trust those they provide digital certificates for their ecommerce systems.#5 - Use Trackable Shipping CompaniesIn some countries like Australia, using trackable shipping companies to ship overseas can be cost preventative. But where ever possible I recommend using Trackable Shipping Companies like Fedex, DHL, EMS, Australian Air Express etc. The reason for this is that your customers know that if you are dealing with companies like this then you are more likely to be legit and apart from that, if you tell them the con note number then they will feel more comfortable in knowing they are actually going to get the parcel and when, because they can visit the shipping companies site to see it has actually left your shipping centre. When I buy from overseas most of my suppliers use Fedex and I love watching where my product is in the shipping process plus it makes me more comfortable that they have actually sent the product.#6 - Use Trusted Credit Card Handling Companies like PayPalSome banks and credit card handling companies run a certification program for their merchants. For example the National Australia Bank in Australia ran a program that certified merchants who used their internet credit card processing system provided a program where the merchant could use a specially developed National Certified logo on their website to prove they were a quality merchant. Many banks around the world now run similar programs as well. I will say though that the cost to join this program are quite astronomical and when I first looked into it you have to pay $300 per month plus a percentage of sales which were very high. There are more economical ways to get this sort of system, with virtually no monthly fees like PayPal. PayPal now owned by ebay has become the sudo standard for credit card purchases on the internet and with their Customer Protection Policy it gives buyers a level of comfort in buying from you. The cool part about this service is that it costs absolutely nothing to join and their merchant fees are pretty much inline with most standard merchant facilities. An added bonus is that you can put a PayPal logo on your website so that people know they will be going through a quality organisation.#7 - Provide Live Support OnlineLive Online Support has been around for about 5 years now. I first purchased my online support system about 3 years ago and I can definitely attribute about 30 to 40 percent of my sales to this tool. Essentially the way the system works is that you have a logo on your webpage which states whether Live Support is available and when you click on the logo a small screen opens that allows you to talk to an operator. Essentially the system allows you to check out about the merchant and talk to their operators like you would say on a phone. From the consumers point of view, the live support system gives them confidence in knowing that the service you offer is legit and there are people actually running the service. More so, they feel comfortable there is a way to actually contact you if something goes wrong or they are not happy with your products, which leads me to point eight.#8 - Have your telephone number and contact details on every page of your websiteHaving your telephone number and contact details on every single webpage will build credibility. The reason is that it gives customers the ability to call you easily. If you try to hide away from your customers you will loose sales. One thing to make sure though is that in most countries they have a Free Call Number system like 1800 etc, which many overseas people cannot access, so you need to make sure that you also include your international number as well. Many times I have gone to ring a number in the United States from Australia only to find that I cannot do so because their 1800 number blocks overseas calls, which means if I bought something from this supplier, I would have know way of talking to them directly. I can assure you; these sites do not get my business. One word of caution, there are some people out there who will simply ring you to say they hate your products and would never buy from you for any number of reasons. In those cases simply ignore those people. Everybody in business gets those calls, it is nothing unique (if you have a really crappy product then you deserve it) there are just simply some people out there who are just rude, so I do recommend growing a thick skin.#9 - Have a Clear Privacy PolicyPrivacy has become a big issue for everyone on the Internet. Having a clearly articulated privacy policy is a major benefit from the consumer's point of view as it tells them where they stand when it comes to their privacy on information stored on your website. I have also seen a few pieces of information lurking around which basically states that having a privacy policy may help your search engine position. I do not know how true that is, it might be, but from a consumer's perspective, it helps build credibility that you are a quality website provider.#10 - Have a Returns Policy and Instructions on how to Return ItemsPlease put up your hands if you have bought something on the internet which does not work and you cannot find a way to send it back to the website owner or get a refund? As I look out my windows I see millions of people who have their hands up. This is one of my pet peeves at the moment. I recently bought some software to convert WMA audio files to MP3 format and when I purchased the software they did not tell me how to download it and there were no links on the page. When I did finally get the information, they told me in the email I needed a registration key which was issued during the purchase. Which of course I did not get?Guess what else; they did not have a Returns Policy as well. In the end I gave up in disgust and lost my $70 USD which will work against them because I have been telling all my friends and my 2000 clients who they are and to stay away from them. I figure at $70 a transaction x 2000 that would be a total of $140,000 they have missed out on, simply because they were rude and were not serious about customer service.Whilst you may not like Refunds or Returns (I definitely do not) it is a necessity to have a returns policy because it specifies to the customer how you deal with a Refund or with a Return. In fact, all of my clients I work with online will actually include a link to their Return Policy where their Guarantee is specified. The Returns policy simply says theses are the steps you must follow in returning the products or getting a refund. By doing this, the customer has confidence that you are a legitimate business. One of the other elements you should include in your Returns Policy is your address, telephone number and contact email address for returns. Also specify in the returns policy how long it may take to get a refund. The bottom line is this; these ten elements when specified on a webpage for a customer to see will help prove to them that you are a legitimate and ethically operated business. Having these items on your webpage will certainly give them the confidence your company acts in the way they expect. So, let me finish off by quickly reiterating the ten elements:#1 - Have a Clear Guarantee#2 - Verifiable Testimonials#3 - Join Your Local - Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau#4 - Register with Certified Companies like - Thawte, Alexa#5 - Use Trackable Shipping Companies#6 - Use Trusted Credit Card Handling Companies like Paypal#7 - Provide Live Support Online#8 - Have your telephone number and contact details on every page of your website#9 - Have a Clear Privacy Policy#10 - Have a Returns Policy and Instructions on how to Return Items

Big Guide Through On Page SEO Factors - Part 1

By: Bedrich Omacka

The goal of this guide is to describe as many On Page SEO Factors as possible. If you have ever look for SEO related information, you probably found a lot articles dealing with particular topics. I will try to put these particular topics together and write complete guide which will help you to achieve top positions in search engines like Google, Yahoo!, MSN and others. What are On Page Factors and Off Page Factors? On page optimization is the basic part of SEO. In a nutshell, on page factors include all improvements of your website which will lead to better search engine ranking. Off page factors include everything what is not present on your website - backlinks, their anchor texts, how quickly new links pointing to your website appear etc. Continue reading to discover how to improve your on page factors and move your website to the top of SERP.Keywords in URLIf possible, your URL should contain your main keywords. Let's say that you are a web hosting company and you decided to optimize your website for phrase "Web Hosting Company". Then the best domain name will be "web-hosting-company.com". Maybe you ask now why not "webhostingcompany.com" or "web_hosting_company.com". That's because from the point of search engines the version with hyphens (web-hosting-company) are three words. If you will use the version without hyphens (webhostingcompany) or with underscore character (web_hosting_company), search engines will index this like one word. If you need to separate words, always use hyphens. But don't forget that the goal of your website is not only to be #1 in Google, Yahoo! etc.! Always try to make your URLs not only SEO friendly but also user friendly. I highly recommend not to use too many hyphens in your domain name. Or do you like to write URLs like "web-hosting-php-mysql-perl-website-builder-free-domain.com"?Keywords can be included in the names of directories and files too. The highest weight has keyword in domain name, than in the directory name and then in the file name. While domain name should contain the most general keywords, the directory name may be more specific and file name should be the same as the main keyword(s) of given page. I will use the example with web hosting company again -- this is the URL example of page which contain information about domain name transfer: web-hosting-company.com/domain-name/transfer.php.Another solution how to operate with keywords in URLs are subdomains. Keyword in subdomain has higher weight then in file name. Creating subdomain(s) with keyword can be very good idea for companies which has domain name like "my-company-name.com".This was the basic info regarding on page SEO factors. These information can be useful if you are in process of website building or if you plan to add some fresh content to your website. In the part 2 I will show you how to improve your current website using smart texts in title and meta tag description.

Keywords in the titleTry to include the main keywords in the title. Keywords in title are extremely important so never underestimate this step! Title of every page should be unique, depending on the page topic. Place the title as high as possible in the website source, ideally as the first tag in the "head" section.Google shows about 60 first letters of the title in SERPs, Yahoo! and MSN a little more. So if you will write longer titles, the main information about the page should be included in the first 60 letters. If possible, the main keywords should be in the beginning of the title. This will help you to achieve higher prominence. Example: "Web Hosting Company located in Seychelles Company Name".Keywords in the descriptionMeta tag description describes the content of the particular page. It means that every page of your web should have its own unique description. Many webmasters make the mistake that they use only one general description for the entire website. Yes, it can save their time but there are some disadvantages. First, the description probably will not fit good the page content. Keep in mind that content of the description tag is usually used by search engines as a part of website's listing. Your potential visitor will see this listing and if he will not find what is he looking for he will probably visit website of your competitor. Another problem can happen if some of your pages has too little content. There is a big risk that search engines will classify these sites like duplicate. Nobody knows exactly their algorithm but search engines like fresh, unique content and not duplicate sites.Case study:Some time ago I started a jokes site. The goal of this site was to be ranked good for the main keyword "jokes" and joke categories names (e.g. blonde jokes). So I used unique titles, description and keyword meta tags for the home page and joke categories. The particular jokes had one general title and description (each site included one joke and most jokes was about 15 - 25 words only). And what happened? When I typed into Google site:mysite.tld, I saw this: "Results 1 - 7 of about 43 from mysite.tld. In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 7 already displayed. If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included." So 36 sites was considered duplicate. I probably didn't get "points" for having a lot of unique content. Anyway when I realized this, I changed all titles and descriptions -- I made them all unique. When I tried site:mysite.tld one month later, Google said: "Results 1 - 43 of about 43 from mysite.tld". Conclusion -- if you make your description tags unique, you provide better information for your visitor and search engines too. They will like you both.Meta tag description should contain keywords related to particular page. Always include the keywords used in title (the most important keywords) and add some more specific keywords. Google displays about 150 from description characters in its listings, msn and yahoo more (I have seen up to 300 characters in some yahoo listing descriptions). Anyway if you plan from some reason use longer description, always write the most important information in the beginning. It will be useful not only for your potential visitor when he finds your listing in search engine but also for your search engine ranking. You get a few "points" from search engines because you achieve higher prominence of your keywords you are targeting. Some webmasters confuse meta tag description and keywords. I have seen many websites with description like "Keyword 1, keyword 2, keyword 3 etc.). This is called "keyword stuffing" and you can be sure that search engines don't like it. Here is an example of meta tag description for web hosting site: Web hosting service offering 25,000 MB web space, 400 GB bandwidth, PHP, MySQL and Perl, website builder and free domain name.In the next part of this article I will show you how to use meta tag keywords, alt tags, how to integrate your keywords to the website content and I will say you something about anchor text.

Keywords in meta tag keywordsMeta tag keywords should contain a few most important keywords related to particular page. Every keyword listed in this tag should appear in the page content. Don't try to repeat single keyword, it can be considered spam. Some search engines including Google no longer values this tag. Anyway you lose nothing if you use it. I will use again the example with web hosting website. The good keywords tag can be: web, hosting, company, php, mysql (if you offer PHP and MySQL support, of course). Keywords in alt tagsWhat are alt tags? Try to move mouse pointer over any image on some website. If some text will appear near the mouse pointer, it is the alt tag content. The original purpose of alt tags was to describe the images for users which use browser which doesn't display images. In these days, alt tags can be useful for better images description and as an alternative text which is used in case that the images is not loaded. If your site contains any images which display something what can be described by your keywords, always use these keywords in your alt tags. But never use keywords which have nothing to do with the image. That can be consider cheating and your site may be penalized. Keywords in the website textUse your keywords naturally in the text. Nobody can tell you the ideal keyword density but from my experience 3 - 10 % is fine. Most SEO consultants believe that there is no fixed ideal density. More likely the ideal density depends on the site topic. Anyway if you will write your website content naturally you will probably hit the mark.If possible, use H1, H2 etc. tags. The most important keywords should appear in the H1 tag, H2 (H3, H4... if applicable) tags should contain more specific keywords related to the paragraph below these headings. Important keywords can be highlighted using STRONG or EM tags. STRONG tag makes bold the text and EM creates italic text. I suggest to use these tags instead B and I tags. The visual effect of these tags is the same but text in STRONG and EM tags are considered important by search engines. Keywords in anchor textAnchor text are the words in links. This is one of the most important on page factor. Every link in your menu usually consists of one, two or thee words. These words should exactly describe the content of the target page. In our example with web hosting company, there can be links in site navigation like "Web Hosting Plans", "Domain Names" etc.Sometimes happen that you need more words to describe the target page content but the design of your website doesn't allow larger text. The solution can be the link title which is displayed when the visitor moves mouse pointer over the link. Here is an example: A HREF="domain.html" TITLE="Domain name registration or domain name transfer".In the last part of this article, part 4, I will show you how to improve your website navigation structure and reveal some secrets about site age and its SEO effect.

Site navigation structureGoogle suggests to use tree-like navigation structure. The most important pages should be one click from your home page. These pages should be optimized for more general (and more competitive) keywords. If you will comply with this suggestion your pages with more competitive keywords will get higher portion of pagerank. Pages containing less competitive keywords should be in tier 2 (2 clicks from homepage). These pages need not so big portion of pagerank to be ranked well in SERPs. It is possible that you will need more tiers if you run larger website. You should consider to provide users with links between lower-level pages. It helps to make your site navigation more clear and if you use keywords in the anchor text, you get some very important "points" from search engines.Time from time check your site for broken links. There are some quality free programs or online services which will do it for you automatically. From the point of search engines, the broken links are sign that something is not ok. A lot of broken links can hurt your search engine positions.Avoid pages with extremely long content. Google suggests keep the page size under 100 Kb. In fact, Google evidently prefers smaller pages. It seem be logical because sites with basic information and links to detailed info are more clear then one single page where the webmaster placed all available information.Site updatesSearch engines like fresh content. Keep your site up to date -- both, the visitors and search engines will like you.Quality contentThere are some ways how search engines determine if your content is useful for the visitors or not. If the visitor come to your website from Google and immediately click the back button, he probably didn't find what he was looking for. The average time spent on your website is very important factor to determine website quality.Another factor used by search engines to determine website quality is the number of particular pages. If your website consists of many hundreds pages, you more likely offer higher value to your visitors then a website which consists of a single page.Age of the siteGoogle does everything to protect quality of its search results. Spammers usually register domains for one year, try to quickly achieve good positions and because they get banned in a few months, they don't renew the domain name. Instead they register a new one and start the spamming procedure again. From this reason the older sites are more preferred by Google. If you have five years old web which is regularly updated you will have big advantage against new websites. When you register a new domain name you should register it for more then one year. From my own experience when I registered 2 domain names for one year I didn't achieve top positions in the first year. A few days after domain renewal there was a big boost in SERPs. When I registered new domain for 10 years the site was out of sandbox after 3 months. So this was the Guide Through On Page SEO Factors. I hope that these information will help you to rank better in search engines and get more visitors to your website. Good luck!

A Quick Guide to Web Directories

By: Bedrich Omacka

If you are a seasoned Internet marketer, then it is common knowledge that submitting to web directories can dramatically increase your page rank. If you are a newbie webmaster, then you might be quite in doubt as to how web directories can do for you. This article would relay to you what exactly is a web directory, how they work, and how you can use them in promoting your site. By the end of the article, I want you to go add your link to one of the web directories on the Internet and see how it would work for you. What are web directories?Simply put, a Web Directory is a collection of web sites presented in a categorized format. I suppose that you know how Yellow Pages looks like, a web directory is pretty much the same thing, only this time websites are categorized in such a way that internet users can easily navigate through them and find the website that they need. How do web directories work? A web directory submission is one type of marketing strategy you can employ. By simply adding your website in web directories it can dramatically increase your sites exposure and your pagerank. Why so? Of course aside for submitting your website name, you would naturally add your website link or URL to the site. This constitute for one back link. What do you need inbound links for? Increasing the number of your inbound links would relatively increase your pagerank. A pagerank simply refers to your position in search engines results. For instance, if an online user searches for "car parts", along with your SEO-content and bunch of good back links, you would likely hit the first few pages of the search results, thus increasing the exposure of your website. If back links are what you are after, then submitting your site to web directories is one effective way to get some. Web directories are also one way of acquiring permanent links. Permanent links are very valuable since you would have your live link posted on web directories for good or at least during the lifetime of the web directory where you posted your link. It is important to take note though, that offering permanent links are still in the discretion of web directories owner. Aside from improving your page rank, web directories are also a form of web advertising. In addition to using search engines, online users also rely on web directories to direct them to certain websites they are searching for. Since websites in web directories are categorized accordingly, navigating through them is easy and convenient. If for example one online user is about to buy bathroom tiles, he would probably go to the category under 'home improvement' and if your related site is under that, you are most likely to have an instant visitor, thus increasing your traffic. In the online world, traffic is everything. If you get more visitors drop by your site, then that means you have a number of potential clients, thus increasing your sales. Choosing a web directory There are three types of web directories free, paid and niche directories. Free web directories are, of course, the natural choice for webmasters with a tight budget. Some free web directories requires a reciprocal link and some don't. Reciprocal links are simply links of the web directory's URL that you are required to post in your own site. It's a give and take concept. When you post your website to a web directory, you need to return the favor by posting their URL to your site as well. The only drawback with some free directories is that they may not be properly maintained. Spam sites may find their way into these free directories because they may lack appropriate monitoring. Then again, there are free web directories that can offer as much quality links than paid directories. If you have the budget for it, you can also opt to submit your site to paid directories. These types of websites may charge as low as $10 per year. Some popular directories, like Yahoo, can charge as high as $299 as annual fees. The rate that paid web directories charge is relative to the website's pagerank. If the web directory site you are submitting to have PR9, then prepare to shell out a big chunk of your advertising budget. A web directory with a PR3 or PR4 would normally charge low.The third type of web directory is a niche web directory. These are web directory sites that cater to a particular group of websites. For instance, a web directory with the niche under "business" would only allow submission from business websites. Posting your websites into niche web directories would give you better hits since you have a bigger exposure to your target market. How to submit your website First, you need to find a good web directory site. Check the web directory and be sure it does not contain several spam sites. One way to find out if spam sites are listed is by doing a search for terms like Viagra, Sex etc. If you notice a large number of search results, then that directory is not a good one. Because in worst-case scenario, your own website may even be penalized by some search engines. The second thing you need to do is to choose the appropriate category where you should add your website to. You would get to your target audience better if you place your website in the right category. If not, you would not get much traffic from your possible visitors. The next thing is to write a good description of your website. These are snippets that would describe what your website has to offer. Description should be short and catchy. It is also a good idea to make sure to write a good meaningful description as many directories do not approve websites with bad descriptions. The last thing to do, which is very important and the part that is often take for granted, is to check if your link is working! You don't want to get your website URL misspelled or anything like that, hence the whole process would be to no avail.

Online Promotion: Using Bumper Stickers To Promote Your Online Business But There Are 3 Rules

By: Chris Le Roy

When I first promoted the idea to my clients of using bumper stickers to promote their online business assets, they all thought I was nuts. In fact some of the comments were like "Promoting your online business on bumper stickers, you have got to be kidding, no one is going to access your website." Except along came the 3G Network and true internet enabled phones. Guess who's laughing now!The world and the internet is undergoing a major revolution. The revolution is that the world is truly getting wired with more and more gadgets becoming wired to the internet and in particular mobile phones and vehicles. Two years ago, the most common way people would access the internet was through using a computer at either work or home. With the release of internet enabled phones, more and more people are now using these devices to engage services and buy products. We started a campaign some time ago in which we decided we were going to actually use our website in our car cleaning business as the primary contact point rather than using a phone number. We placed bumper stickers and window decal stickers on cars we clean regularly to tell the owners when their car was next due for a car cleaning service (similar to mechanics) but instead of having our logo only on the outside of the sticker, we incorporated our logo and domain together. The outcome, 35% of our business now comes from people seeing the bumper stickers on the cars whilst they are in carparks or being driven around the city.So what do you think this type of advertising is worth if you had to pay for it. Well in our city to place a moveable ad it costs between $1,500 to $2,500 for a 6 week stint on a bus. I am quite sure in places like LA or New York you could expect to pay $20,000 to $100,000 for that same service. We get the service for Free and we currently almost 1,000 cars with bumper stickers on them and consequently this is one of the largest sources of business for our car cleaning business. We have also used the same principle for other businesses as well like builders, computer training and so forth. Why does it work? One of the reasons we chose to use our domain on our bumper stickers was that a domain name or text is much easier to remember than a phone number. If you do not believe me, just look at the number of advertisers who get 1800 or 1300 numbers and then convert the next 4 or 6 numbers to text. For example there is a dentist in Townsville whose phone number is 1800 SMILE. I have no idea what the number is but I certainly remember his 1800 SMILE.Look to get this technique to work there are three key rules you must follow in using bumper stickers on cars or vehicles -1. Your Domain Name Must Be Easy To RememberWhen we used this technique for our computer training business we found the domain name we used was way too difficult for people to remember because it had a combination of ones and dashes in it. To overcome this issue we simply bought an easy to remember domain name and then linked it back to our existing domain. For example we actually used the domain Townsville Computer Training dot com on the bumper sticker because it was easier to remember than one dash on dash one dot biz. Keep the domain names you use really simple and easy to remember and this will work really easily. For example if you ran a pizza shop and you wanted people to order online and you were in say LA in the United States, I would be securing a bumper sticker with domain name LAONLINEPIZZA.com This is a much simpler domain name to remember than your business name. However, your online optimization should still revert around your business name.2. Make Sure Your Text Is Able To Be Read 2 Car Lengths AwayThe biggest mistake I see many people who use stickers on their cars is to make the text to small to see. I always try to develop our stickers so that the domain names actually can be seen two car lengths away. If the text is too small then no-one will see your website domain.3. Encourage People to Put Your Sticker Where it is visibleThe biggest challenge most people have is to get people to put the sticker on their vehicles after they have received it. The best way to do that is to give them something free if they do that. For example if you ran a website and you wanted your clients to put a sticker on their car, you might say to them, send me a photo of the sticker on your car and I will give you a 10% discount off your next purchase or you might give them a Free Travel Mug. Put it this way, giving them something that is cost effective for you as a reward will mean they are more likely to do that.I have seen many different companies use a range of techniques to achieve this. One of the radio stations in North Queensland Australia, wanted to promote people to listen to their station, so they ran a competition where they got everyone to put a sticker with the radio stations logo onto their cars and they ran prize patrols over a number of weeks. If your car was seen with a sticker on it, you were then pulled over and given a prize.Another food outlet company, actually global fast food chain gave a sticker out with their logo on it and a special offer, out in the local newspaper. They basically said that if you put the sticker on the driver side of your car each time you go through their drive thru you would get a free drink upgrade. The interesting thing about this sticker is that it expires after 6 months, but it is quite amazing the number of people who still have the stickers on their cars, promoting the fast food chain two or three years after the sticker had expired.Literally the bumper sticker has become a long term advertisement for your business. Bumper stickers with your logo and domain name is a great offline promotional tool and will get results for your business for a lot longer than any other medium plus the cost of a bumper sticker is negligible compared to other mediums. One other note, you can measure the success of this medium by ensuring the domain name used is different and easier to read than your standard business domain name and as such the number of people who use the bumper stick domain should be able to be measured just as you would on the internet. This will then prove to you whether your marketing investment was in fact worth while.

SEO: Should You Use Dashes, Underscores or Neither in Domain Names

By: Chris Le Roy

One of the biggest challenges we face as internet business owners is trying to secure domain names that have the keywords we need to help in the Search Engine Optimization process. Over the last few years the number of domains being registered is growing exponentially and Internet marketers are now reverting to domain names that use a combination of dashes and underscores, however you need to be careful using dashes and underscores in the domain names because you can in fact make it very difficult for a client to actually remember your website and come back to it if they did not add it to their favorites. In the long run, this can challenge the ability of your business to grow. From a number of focus groups we have run in Australia and also in conversation with our customers, we have found that a domain using dashes is in fact harder for a customer to remember then one with underscores. One of the core reasons that people find using underscores easier to remember goes back to the bad old days of DOS. The DOS operating system did not allow for names to have spaces and the substitute for spaces was the underscore, consequently people remember underscores between names better than those that use dashes. If you were choosing a Key Word Rich Name the best choice would be to have the domain with no dashes or underscores. For example if I was trying to setup a domain for a car detailing service in Los Angeles, the best non-company name specific domain for the location would be -LosAngelesCarDetailingService.comThe key advantage of this name is that customers will easily remember the name and that there are no underscores or dashes. This domain is also far more easier for people to remember if they see the domain using off-line marketing techniques like bumper bar stickers. The domain name is also far more easier for you as the business owner to explain to the client to lookup on the web.For example we could have rewritten this domain -Los_Angeles_Car_Detailing_Service.com orLos-Angeles-Car-Detailing-Service.comIf I had a choice between the two names above, from experience I would recommend the first one over the second. The reason for this is that your clients who are not extensively internet savvy will tend to interpret a dash, whether spoken or seen as an underscore. Once again this occurs because of the history people have with the DOS operating system. The other issue you need to be very cautious of doing is using a combination of dashes and underscores. In a recent survey my company did of 200 keywords in the three major search engines, we found that more and more companies are registering domains with either dashes or underscores in the domain name and then use the alternative with the file names. Let me show you an example …Los_Angeles_Car_Detailing_Service.com/Platinum-Car-Cleaning-Service.asp You can see in the domain above that we have used a combination of dashes and underscores. Doing this is really poor practice because if a person visits your website and wants to get back to the page above, they will get mixed up as to whether they should be using underscores or dashes. When using underscores or dashes in your domain, make sure that you stay consistent and only use either all dashes or all underscores. It is unwise to use a combination of these elements as shown above.Look the bottom line is this; from a client user perspective the best domain to register is one without spaces. If that domain is not available then the next best one is one that uses underscores and finally the dashes option should only be used in the worst case scenario. One of the other issues you need to be cautious about when registering a domain is to not make the domain name to long. In online advertising sites like Google Adwords the domain name display allows only a maximum of 35 characters. If your domain name is longer than 35 characters you will not be able to type it into the Display URL box the domain which will mean if you do not display the right URL then Google will ban your Adwords campaign. In the examples I used above I would not be able to run an Adwords campaign because the number of characters in the domain exceeds the Display URL's capability and as such limits your advertising options for pay-per-click advertising.Choosing the right domain is an important step and if you get it wrong it can limit your abilities to market your website and cost you money.

Budget Web Hosting – Picking One of Many!

By: Kistina Robin

So you thought it was easy picking up a budget web hosting company? You wish!Doing so could not just be an overwhelming but a critical job too. To be honest, choosing any web hosting company is a tedious task considering there are so many of them out there. A simple litmus test could be just searching for web hosting on any search engine and you would have millions of hosts simply a click away.Surprisingly, many people are ignorant of this term, Budget Web Hosting. For you folks, let us explain. Budget Hosting (generally speaking) is a hosting service that is below $10/month. The word budget indicates a low price. Mostly, companies catering to Budget Web Hosting offer a one year plan and in some cases, require a setup fee to get things rolling. Now begins the crucial bit, i.e. evaluating the potential budget web hosting companies. Obviously, your first measure shall be to look into their homepage and see if the company actually appears professional, dependable and worthwhile. Have you easily discovered the information you required? See their contact information page and check if they have a physical contact address alongside other essentials. If you don’t find this, it’s a cause for concern. Another important aspect that many people tend to ignore is whether the budget web hosting company has a toll free number. If they don’t, it might not be a very sensible idea making calls across the globe and having enormous telephone bills. You might find this statement a bit judgmental but the fact remains that toll free number is a depiction of a company’s keenness to help! The next thing in question has to be the uptime guarantee. Wondering what’s that about? Uptime guarantee means the actual time that the server is up, live and serving your web page. For instance, 90 percent of uptime guarantee would mean that the company’s servers would be working 90 percent of the time. Talking of guarantee, it is not surprising that many of the Budget web hosting companies do not guarantee client satisfaction. Then there are those who blow it to an unrealistic extent. Look into their services agreement and evaluate their terms and conditions. This should give you fair idea of where they actually stand. Check if there are any refund policies incase of substandard service. Remember, its better to look around if you are not too comfortable with it.Despite the fact that there is more than just one factor to be measured in reaching a decision for your most appropriate Budget web hosting company, last but not the least of the vital considerations is the AFTER sale support. The question is: what sort of resources are made available to you. Are there any free scripts or marketing tools offered to you? Would you get enough support for setting up your account with this particular budget web hosting company? Remember, simply because a company offers budget web hosting isn’t a barometer enough. Is it offering you quality service is what you need to really see!

Create an RSS Feed for Your Website Step-by-Step

Syndicating your own website content is a great way to provide information to your readers with little or no effort. Using RSS, your updated content is delivered to individuals who have subscribed to your feed automatically. In this article, I'll briefly explain RSS and show you how to syndicate your own website content - even if you know very little about RSS feeds. RSS DefinedAccording to Wikipedia, RSS is a simple XML-based system that allows users to subscribe to their favorite websites. Using RSS, webmasters can put their content into a standardized format, which can be viewed and organized through RSS-aware software or automatically conveyed as new content on another website.A program known as a feed reader or aggregator can check a list of feeds on behalf of a user and display any updated articles that it finds. It is common to find web feeds on major websites and many smaller ones. Some websites let people choose between RSS or Atom formatted web feeds. Choosing the Content you want to SyndicateOkay, so you're interested in syndication but aren't exactly sure what you should be syndicating. There's really no hard and fast rule here. Howerver, keep in mind that anything you plan to syndicate via RSS should be unique, of value to a given audience, and something that gets updated on a regular basis. Some individuals syndicate their content by placing an RSS feed on their home page. As the website is updated, and a new feed is produced, content is sent directly to subscribers. Others choose to provide a feed of specific content pages on their site. The choice is yours. So How do you Create an RSS Feed? All RSS feeds are written using a code type called XML. If you're not familiar with XML, don't let that scare you off. I'll provide the specific code you need and instructions on what to do with it. To begin, you'll need to create an RSS file that contains a Title, Description, and Link URL. This information will be used by the RSS reader when individuals subscribe to your RSS feed. Follow these simple steps.1. Go to your "Start Menu" in the lower left-hand corner of your computer screen. Click on "All Programs" and navigate to Accessories. There you'll find an option called "Notepad". Notepad is a simple text editor that you will use to develop your RSS script. 2. Write the RSS script which contains information about your website or content page and information about the content you'll be syndicating. To do so, copy the following into Notepad. Replace the bold content with your own site's information. 3. Save, Upload, and Validate your .xml code. After saving your RSS file via notepad, the next step is to upload your .xml file to your web server. This file should be placed in the same directory as your homepage or the directory of the page you've selected to syndicate. 4. Subscribe to your own feed. After you've uploaded all of your pages to your live site or testing server, open Internet Explorer and click on your own RSS button. You should be taken to a dialogue box that asks if you'd like to subscribe to your feed. Subscribe and confirm that the feed has been added to your list of RSS feeds (it should appear in a dialogue box on the left hand side of the page). If you're using Firefox, you will only receive a text page when clicking on your RSS button. Those using the firefox browsers can click on a small icon that resides on their browser nav bar to add your feed. Additionally the text file contains your feed URL which can also be used.

How to Choose a Good SEO Consultant By : Anthony Yap

If a man can write a better book, preach a better sermon, or make a better mousetrap than his neighbor, though he build his house in the woods, the world will make a beaten path to his door - Ralph Waldo Emerson. This may have been correct in the business paradigm of the 19th and 20th century, but in the new paradigm of the Internet, it no longer holds true - especially if you substitute ‘house’ with ‘website’. Over 88% of Americans who shop online use Search Engines to conduct research on what they are buying (Source: SEMPO) and the three large search engines have over 80% of the market between them (Source: Search Engine Watch). This means that you must achieve good ranking in one or all of these search engines in order to reach your target customers. Because search engine optimization (SEO) is better left to an expert, this means you must choose a SEO consultant to enhance your web presence and maximize site usability, thus increasing your profits. You would choose a SEO company the same way you would assess any company you were going to purchase a service from. Find out how long they've been in business, and see if they'll tell you exactly how it is they do their work. Ask them about their previous work and clients and check if you can use these clients as references.Check their methodology. Don’t expect exact specifics, but ensure they are offering more than just ‘submission services’ and ‘meta-tag optimization’. Look for their ability to perform on-page optimization, to improve site architecture, to research good keywords, and to optimize content, and to do link building. SEO doesn’t use a “magic bullet” and it takes a variety of techniques to improve search engine placement. If they have a blog, read a few of their posts and see if their techniques make sense or come across as being “tricky”.Make sure that the SEO consultant has thorough, up-to-date knowledge and understanding of the major search engines and their algorithms. These algorithms are ever changing and improving so the consultant should be able to show that he/she keeps up with the ever changing markets by belonging to various forums, discussion groups and peer organizations.Look at their affiliations. Do they belong to the Better Business Bureau (BBB)? Do they belong to any of the search engine marketing or online advertising trade associations? Who are their clients? Are their clients reputable? You can usually get a good indication of a company’s reputation by seeing who they align themselves with or who they don’t.Another overlooked factor to check is this: Do they rank naturally for SEO related keywords? If they cannot even rank their website for even one reasonably competitive keyword phrase, this should set off some alarm bells. After all, how can a SEO company do something for you that they can’t even perform for themselves?Search engine optimization is not a ‘once-off’ magic pill to get you to the top of the rankings, and beware SEO consultants who offer this. Ensure that your SEO consultant not only can increase your ranking but can keep you there with a maintenance program. Check to see what the long-term strategy is going to be employed on your behalf. Finally, enquire about their business methods. Do they subscribe to the Best Practices for the SEO/Search Engine Marketing Industry? Are they using white hat or black hat SEO techniques? All these are questions are important considerations for choosing the right SEO for your business.
